Steve Whittle: Reclaiming What It Means to “Man Up”

BEING A MAN IN TODAY’S WORLD PODCAST SERIES

Steve Whittle

Founder of Tough to Talk

Steve Whittle is the founder of Tough to Talk, a charity dedicated to breaking down the barriers that prevent men from speaking openly about their mental health. Drawing on his own experience of ADHD, complex PTSD, depression and a period of severe crisis, Steve challenges conventional approaches to men's mental health, including the idea of suicide as a response to overwhelming pain rather than a wish to die. He explores the impact of societal expectations, masculinity, role models and identity on men's wellbeing, the pressures facing young men in a fast-changing world, and the influence of social media and the manosphere. Steve makes the case for prevention, early intervention and safe spaces, and for reclaiming and reframing what it means to “man up”.
