BEING A MAN IN TODAY’S WORLD PODCAST SERIES

Dr Rebecca Owens

Evolutionary psychologist and Head of the School of Psychology at the University of Sunderland

Dr Rebecca Owens, known as Becky, is an evolutionary psychologist and Head of the School of Psychology at the University of Sunderland, where her research focuses on male psychology. She teaches male psychology and is a men and boys champion for the Centre for Policy Research on Men and Boys. Becky reflects on growing up in Sunderland and Peterlee, and how the North East's industrial and mining heritage shaped values of hard work, trust, loyalty and camaraderie. She and Susan discuss how the loss of traditional community spaces has affected men's sense of belonging, and why some young men turn to online communities, including the manosphere, in search of connection. Becky explains why she questions the term “toxic masculinity”, how to challenge harmful ideas without shaming young men, and why we need more nuanced conversations about men's mental health.
